Lions Know What to Do About Deer

A rather foolish deer jumped the fence into the lions' cage at the National Zoo yesterday. Although spectators cheered for the deer to escape -- evidently there were no gardeners among them -- the lions fatally injured the deer before keepers got them away. A bit of video here, revealing that zoo-bred lionesses are about as good at hunting deer as my cats are at hunting mice.

Given how many deer there are in Rock Creek Park -- last time I was there I stumbled into a group of 15, including two young fawns born out of season -- I am surprised this sort of thing doesn't happen all the time.
